Earl Scruggs

Scruggs had played an open back banjo using the frailing technique, though as an adult Earl had no recollection of his father’s playing. Scruggs played the pump organ. Scruggs recalled a visit to his uncle’s home at age six to hear a blind banjo player named Mack Woolbright, who played a finger picking style and had recorded for Columbia Records. He moved it around depending on what part of the neck he was playing. This motion is followed by striking the thumb on a single string. When done skillfully and in rapid sequence, the style allows any digit though usually the thumb to play a melody, while the other two digits play arpeggios of the melody line.

Q: Thanks for your website. I remain confused about my old Vega 5 string banjo. It is stamped with “Fairbanks, made by Vega” which suggests , but the serial number is .

The Custom is the guitar he is generally associated with. Gibson has also produced two Billie Joe Armstrong Signature Les Paul Junior models one double cutaway, and one single cutaway as well as a very limited run of signature acoustic guitars. Since his death, Gibson has discontinued all Chet Atkins models and Gretsch has resumed the manufacturing and distribution of the Chet Atkins line. Beck’s fascination with the guitar sprang as much from his interest in Les Paul , the man, as from his love of the guitar itself.

Beck told an interviewer: The guitar was given to him in by Peter Green. After Bennett’s death the guitar was given to musician Anthony Top Topham. This was the guitar Bloomfield used as a member of the Electric Flag, and on the Super Session album and concerts. Bloomfield eventually lost the guitar in Canada; Wolkin and Keenom’s biography revealed a club owner kept the guitar as partial compensation after Bloomfield cut short a round of appearances.

My S1 Soprano repaired bridge Orville Gibson started making Mandolins with a carved, arched solid wood top and back, prior to this, Mandolins had a flat solid wood top and a slatted bowl-like back , in Orville died in and Lloyd Loar became the chief luthier for the company in his place. It was rescued by the current owners and is currently an independent Guitar maker.

Gibson don’t currently have Ukuleles in their catalogue but from through to they made some of the worlds finest Ukuleles and Banjoleles. These are very sought after and command a very high price when they come up for sale. The exception to the current lack of production, is Gibson currently own the Epiphone brand and they currently do produce a couple of Ukulele’s. However since this is already a very long entry I have a made a separate one for them.

Epiphone also had a long history of Banjolele manufacture before Gibson took them over so there is another entry for the Epiphone’s more historic offerings. And while on the topic of famous historic names Gibson currently own, there is also Dobro and Slingerland but as they are not being used for any Ukulele branding currently, though they were before Gibson took them over, both of these get their own entries too.

Like Martin , who at one stage Gibson considered buying from and rebranding – but never did , Gibson produced different levels of decoration.

Sorry, we couldn’t find that page.

Also here’s a video of me trying my first song to give you an idea of the sound. I have many years of guitar experience but only 2 days of banjo so don’t expect wonders, I know that I need to use my thumb: I know as much as this is a damn fine banjo and now probably the most valuable single thing in my home but I am confused about the history of the instrument. From what I have researched it seems that Gibson did not build Bella Voce models as early as , general production started

Bluegrass was taking root, and the Gibson Mastertone was the banjo of choice. Today original five string Mastertones from that era have become amongst the most .

Any professional grade banjo can be retrofitted with this system in our shop. Both were developed over more than 2 years of rigorous analysis, testing, and prototyping using state-of-the-art scientific equipment. When Huber Banjos was launched in , Steve Huber quickly established himself as an innovator in banjo construction.

His Vintage Flathead tone ring replicated the formula of the vaunted flathead rings from the s, and his exacting attention to detail in reproducing other prewar specs showed the banjo world how closely the tone and response of the celebrated pre war banjos could be found in a new instrument. But further study over the intervening years showed Huber that certain banjos among these sought-after prewar flatheads stood out above the others.

Of course most of the early recordings that set the standards for bluegrass banjo tone were recorded with relatively new instruments, so Huber knew it was possible to achieve this in a new instrument.

Gibson Banjo Construction Evolution: to Many interesting changes occurred in the development of the Gibson banjo line between its inception in October , and .

Tweet on Twitter While five-string banjos are far more popular today than any other style, during the height of the Dixieland Era of the s, when Gibson introduced its famous Mastertone banjos, four-string tenor and plectrum models were in far greater demand. Five-string banjos were popular from the s until shortly after the turn of the century, when mandolin orchestras achieved prominence and the banjo went into relative eclipse.

Banjo regained great popularity starting in the late teens and peaking in the s with the advent of Dixieland music. Banjo manufacturers concentrated on tenor and plectrum models to satisfy this market, but they continued to make five-string banjos to satisfy the old-style players, and offered neck options. Gibson offered tenor, plectrum, mandolin, five-string, six-string guitar, four-string cello, and ukulele banjos.

Ukulele-banjos featured downsized bodies, but the other instruments were offered with standard Gibson banjo bodies with necks that were essentially interchangeable. Gibson first offered Mastertone banjos in While Mastertones had many innovative features, companies such as Paramount, Bacon and Day, and Vega had beaten Gibson to the punch by introducing high-grade Dixieland-style banjos with relatively modern construction as early as The Gibson Mastertone, to a large extent, was modeled after Paramount banjos.

The peghead shape of the Mastertone tenor, plectrum, and five-string models was copied from the Paramount design, with the exception of the upper tip. The resonator was also very similar. The flange also looked similar to the Paramount design, but was structurally different. By , the more standard modern rounded brackets were utilized with a notched tension hoop. Over the years, Gibson has made dozens of Mastertone variations.
